Puerco Pueblo Trail

Puerco Pueblo is a 100-room Ancestral Puebloan village occupied from around 1250 to 1380 CE, built in a single-story U-shaped configuration around a central plaza above the Puerco River. The partially excavated site preserves room outlines, two circular kivas, and a midden mound that archaeologists have used to reconstruct diet, ceramics, and trade networks extending as far as the Gulf of California. The adjacent rock art panel is the trail's most compelling feature: dozens of petroglyphs pecked into desert-varnished sandstone depict spirals, human figures, lizards, and a famous solar calendar panel where a spiral glyph is precisely bisected by a dagger of light at solar noon on both solstices and equinoxes. The paved loop is the most accessible trail in the park, suitable for strollers and wheelchairs throughout. The Puerco River below the pueblo is one of the few reliable water sources in this section of the Painted Desert, and the riparian corridor supports cottonwood, willow, and a remarkable diversity of migratory birds during spring and fall passage.
