Tall Trees Grove Trail

Tall Trees Grove protects the floodplain stand where the world's tallest measured tree — Hyperion, at 380.3 feet — was discovered in 2006, though the exact location of Hyperion is deliberately withheld from the public to prevent trampling the fragile root zone. Access requires a free permit with a limited daily quota, obtained from the Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center, and a gate combination to a gated service road that provides the only access to the trailhead. From the parking area the trail descends 700 feet to Redwood Creek, where the alluvial flat supports trees that regularly exceed 360 feet — not the tallest in the grove, but among the tallest organisms ever documented on Earth. The floodplain setting means the trees receive both coastal fog moisture and nutrient-rich sediment from periodic flooding, producing the conditions that favor maximum height growth. Elk graze the creek corridor, and the flat light that filters through the canopy on overcast days makes this one of the most photographically stunning locations in the California coast redwood range. The permit system keeps daily visitation below 50 people, preserving a quality of silence appropriate to the trees themselves.
