The Emerald Lake Trail is one of Rocky Mountain National Park's most beloved hikes, stringing together three glacially carved lakes in a stunning alpine amphitheater. The journey begins at Bear Lake Trailhead and winds through dense subalpine forest before arriving at Nymph Lake, where lily pads float on calm water reflecting surrounding peaks. Continuing upward, the trail reaches Dream Lake, widely considered one of the most photographed scenes in Colorado, with Hallett Peak and Flattop Mountain rising dramatically above the turquoise surface. The final push leads to Emerald Lake itself, cradled in a granite cirque beneath Hallett Peak's 12,713-foot summit. The route gains approximately 650 feet over its 1.8-mile one-way distance, making it accessible to most hikers. Wildflowers carpet the meadows in July and August, while golden aspens frame the approach in late September. Snow lingers on shaded slopes well into June, and the lakes can refreeze in early October. Arrive early to secure parking at the popular Bear Lake lot; the area is served by a free park shuttle during summer months.
