Tanque Verde Ridge Trail

The Tanque Verde Ridge Trail is Saguaro National Park East's premier day hike, climbing 1,800 feet along a dramatic ridgeline that separates the Tanque Verde and Rincon valleys. Beginning at the Javelina Picnic Area trailhead, the path ascends steeply through increasingly dense saguaro cactus forest before cresting the ridge and following it eastward toward the Rincon Mountains. The ecological transition from lower Sonoran desert to oak-pine woodland is vivid and dramatic: hikers move from towering saguaros and prickly pear through grassland and manzanita scrub before entering a forest of Emory oak and Mexican blue oak at higher elevations. Occasional ponderosa pines appear on north-facing slopes above 6,000 feet. Views from the ridge encompass Tucson's sprawling metro area to the west and the remote Rincon Mountain backcountry to the east. Wildlife commonly encountered includes white-tailed deer, mule deer, javelinas (collared peccaries), and Harris's hawks hunting in cooperative family groups. The trail can be extended into a multi-day backpacking trip to Manning Camp at 8,000 feet, where a historic cabin sits amid ponderosa pine forest.
