Sunset Stroll Trail

The Sunset Stroll is White Sands National Park's most atmospheric evening experience, a ranger-led program that departs from the Heart of the Sands area each evening approximately 45 minutes before sunset. The flat, half-mile out-and-back route wanders into the dune field's most photogenic interior, where the pure white gypsum sand—composed of selenite crystals dissolved from the San Andres and Sacramento Mountains and carried by wind into this enclosed basin—glows brilliant gold and amber in the low-angle evening light. Rangers interpret the unique geology of the Tularosa Basin, explaining how the world's largest gypsum dune field formed over 10,000 years as the ancient Lake Otero evaporated and left its mineral deposits to be sculpted by persistent southwesterly winds. The program also covers the ecological adaptations of the bleached earless lizard, the Apache pocket mouse, and the white sands wolf spider—species that have evolved pale coloration to match the white substrate. The surrounding San Andres Mountains turn deep purple as the sun sets, and the sky can produce extraordinary colors due to suspended dust and the park's desert air quality. The trail is informal and hikers navigate by following ranger guidance across the unbounded dune surface.
