Zion Narrows Top Down

The Zion Narrows top-down route is widely considered one of the greatest slot canyon hikes in North America, spending 16 miles descending the Virgin River through the narrowest section of Zion Canyon, where walls rise 1,000 feet above and the canyon floor is sometimes only 20 feet wide. The journey begins at Chamberlain's Ranch on the east side of the park, accessible via a lengthy shuttle or vehicle shuttle arrangement, and immediately enters the North Fork Virgin River drainage that carved this extraordinary passage through Navajo sandstone over millions of years. Hikers wade the river throughout the route—there is often no alternative, as the canyon walls rise directly from the water—making waterproof gear, neoprene socks, and canyon sandals or wading shoes essential equipment. Water depth varies from ankle-deep riffles to chest-deep pools depending on the season and recent precipitation. Flash floods are the principal hazard: the National Park Service monitors upstream weather conditions and closes the canyon when flood risk rises, as a storm miles away can send a wall of water through the slot with little warning. The canyon walls display extraordinary geological and hydrological features including hanging gardens, spring-fed alcoves, and the interface of Navajo and Kayenta sandstone formations. Overnight camping on sandy beaches within the canyon requires a wilderness permit; the trail exits at the Temple of Sinawava at the end of Zion Canyon Scenic Drive.
