Broken Arch Trail

Broken Arch Trail offers a delightful loop through one of the quieter corners of Arches National Park, passing through open grassland meadows and juniper woodland before arriving at its namesake arch. Despite its name, Broken Arch is not actually broken, though a crack near its crown gives the impression it might be. The arch stands roughly 43 feet high and 59 feet wide, framing striking desert scenery beyond. The loop trail connects through to the Sand Dune Arch area, where fine red sand has accumulated in a sheltered slot canyon alcove, providing a natural sandbox environment beloved by children and adults alike. The open grassland sections of this trail feel almost pastoral compared to the stark rock landscapes elsewhere in the park, with seasonal wildflowers and grasses swaying in the desert breeze. Juniper and pinyon pine offer occasional shade. The trail also passes a picnic area, making it a convenient choice for a midday outing. Because it receives less foot traffic than the Windows or Delicate Arch trails, visitors often enjoy a greater sense of solitude here. The combination of arch viewing, open meadow, and sandy slot canyon makes this loop one of the most varied and satisfying easy hikes in the park. Dogs are not permitted on this trail per park regulations.
