Cathedral Valley Loop

Cathedral Valley Loop is a remote backcountry route in the northern district of Capitol Reef National Park, accessible only by high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles. The loop traverses approximately 50 miles of unpaved desert road through one of the most geologically spectacular and least-visited landscapes in the American Southwest. The centerpiece attractions are the Temples of the Sun and Moon, two massive monoliths of red Entrada Sandstone rising abruptly from the valley floor like natural cathedrals. These formations, combined with dozens of other fins, mesas, and eroded buttes, create a surreal landscape that feels genuinely primordial. The route crosses the Fremont River near the start, requiring a shallow ford that can be impassable when water is high. The Glass Mountain selenite gypsum deposit, colorful badlands of the Bentonite Hills, and the Cathedral Valley Campground are highlights along the way. Solitude is nearly guaranteed, as the challenging access filters out the casual visitor. A topographic map and extra water, fuel, and supplies are essential. The road surface varies from packed gravel to deep sand and clay that becomes treacherous when wet. Cell service is nonexistent throughout. Despite the logistical demands, Cathedral Valley rewards self-sufficient adventurers with an experience of raw desert grandeur that ranks among the finest in the national park system.
