Navajo Knobs Trail

Navajo Knobs Trail is one of the most demanding and rewarding hikes in Capitol Reef National Park, ascending from the Hickman Bridge trailhead through increasingly dramatic terrain to a series of rounded sandstone knobs atop the Waterpocket Fold. The trail gains significant elevation as it winds up exposed slickrock faces, narrow ledges, and sandy switchbacks, requiring hikers to use hands in places on steeper sections. Navigation requires attention, as cairns mark the route across open slickrock where the path can be less obvious. The destination rewards every step with sweeping 360-degree panoramas encompassing the entire Capitol Reef region, including the Henry Mountains, Waterpocket Fold, and the distant San Rafael Swell. On clear days the views extend for well over a hundred miles in every direction. The knobs themselves sit atop a high sandstone plateau with an otherworldly sculptural quality, the smooth domes glowing orange and white in the desert sun. Carry ample water, as there is no shade or water source along the route. Start early to avoid afternoon heat and potential afternoon thunderstorms in summer months. The trail begins alongside Hickman Bridge Trail before diverging northward. This hike is not suitable for those with a fear of heights or exposure, as some ledge traversals feel airy. The payoff in views and solitude is exceptional.
