West Beach Succession Trail

West Beach Succession Trail is a compact but ecologically rich loop at Indiana Dunes National Park that demonstrates the remarkable process of ecological succession across a series of distinct habitat zones compressed into a short walking distance. Beginning near the shores of Lake Michigan, the trail passes through active blowout dunes where wind constantly reshapes the sandy landscape, then moves into younger dune communities colonized by marram grass and other pioneering species, before transitioning through increasingly mature plant communities representing centuries of succession. The Great Marsh, visible from portions of the trail, provides critical habitat for migratory waterfowl and shorebirds along the Lake Michigan flyway, and birding can be exceptional during spring and fall migrations. The beach section of the route offers sweeping views across the blue expanse of Lake Michigan toward the Chicago skyline, one of the most unexpected vistas in the national park system. The contrast between urban skyline and undisturbed natural shoreline makes Indiana Dunes a genuinely unique park experience. Interpretive signs explain the succession process and the ecological significance of each habitat zone traversed. The dune climbs are short but can be steep and sandy, providing a moderate physical challenge despite the overall easy rating. Sunset visits from the beach are particularly memorable. West Beach is one of the most popular destinations in the park and can be busy on summer weekends.
