Black Rock Canyon Loop

The Black Rock Canyon Loop is one of the finest moderate hiking circuits in Joshua Tree National Park, combining the High Desert Discovery Trail with the push to Warren Peak at 5,103 feet, the highest accessible summit in the Black Rock area. This northwestern corner of the park receives more moisture than the lower desert zones, supporting a notably diverse flora that includes Joshua trees, pinyon pines, junipers, and a rich understory of desert shrubs.

The loop begins at the Black Rock Canyon Campground and Trailhead, following the Black Rock Canyon wash before climbing through increasingly dense pinyon-juniper woodland toward the crest of the Little San Bernardino Mountains. The High Desert Discovery Trail portion loops through varied terrain with interpretive stops highlighting the plants, animals, and geology of this transitional desert zone. The spur to Warren Peak branches off and delivers hikers to a rocky summit with panoramic views stretching north to the San Bernardino Mountains, south toward the Salton Sea, and west across the Coachella Valley on clear days. The elevation makes this area noticeably cooler than the lower park sections, and in wet winters light snowfall occasionally dusts the higher ridges. Wildlife including coyotes, black-tailed jackrabbits, and a variety of raptors inhabit the area. The Black Rock Canyon area has its own campground and is accessible directly from the town of Yucca Valley, making it a convenient entry point for visitors approaching from Los Angeles or Palm Springs.
