Blackrock Summit Trail

Blackrock Summit is one of the most dramatic and unusual landscapes in Shenandoah National Park, a wind-scoured mountaintop buried under an enormous jumble of pale quartzite boulders that stretch in every direction like the ruins of a giant fortress. The loop trail combines the Trayfoot Mountain Trail, the Appalachian Trail, and the Blackrock Spur to create a compact circuit that offers outstanding panoramic views despite its short length. The summit talus field is a geological relic of intense periglacial weathering during the Pleistocene, when freeze-thaw cycles shattered the ancient Erwin Quartzite into the chaotic boulder maze visible today. Clambering over and between the white and gray boulders is part of the experience, though the route requires some careful footing. On clear days, the views extend west across the Shenandoah Valley to the Alleghenies and east over the Piedmont toward Charlottesville. Eastern towhees, dark-eyed juncos, and cedar waxwings nest in the low shrub thickets between boulder outcrops. The trail is accessible year-round and particularly striking in winter when snow fills the crevices between the pale rocks. Located in the less-visited southern district of the park near Loft Mountain, Blackrock Summit rewards hikers seeking big views on a short, manageable outing away from the northern crowds.
