Doyles River Falls Loop

The Doyles River Falls Loop is one of the most rewarding waterfall circuits in Shenandoah National Park, linking the two-tiered Doyles River Falls with the equally impressive Jones Run Falls along a challenging loop that plunges deep into the Blue Ridge hollows below Skyline Drive. The trail descends steeply from the Doyles River Overlook parking area, losing nearly 1,000 feet before reaching the upper and lower cascades of Doyles River Falls, where the stream tumbles over ancient Catoctin greenstone in a series of curtain drops. The circuit then climbs to the Appalachian Trail before descending again to Jones Run Falls, a slender curtain of water framed by hemlock trees. The connecting ridgeline section offers filtered views over the South Fork Shenandoah River valley and the Massanutten Mountain range beyond. Spring brings peak waterfall flow and a carpet of trout lily, trillium, and hepatica along the stream banks. Fall color in the hollows is exceptional, with rich yellow tulip poplar and deep red sourwood displaying for weeks in October. The significant elevation change on this loop, gained and lost multiple times, makes it genuinely strenuous despite the modest total mileage. Doyles River is a hidden gem compared to the heavily visited Dark Hollow and White Oak Canyon trails, offering similar waterfall drama with far fewer crowds.
