Rose River Loop

The Rose River Loop is a gem of the central district of Shenandoah National Park, combining two distinct stream corridors - Hogcamp Branch and the Rose River - into a waterfall-rich loop that passes through some of the most beautiful second-growth forest in the park. The trail descends from Fishers Gap Overlook along Hogcamp Branch, passing a series of cascades and small swimming holes popular with families in summer. The main attraction is the Rose River Falls, a broad, multi-tiered cascade that drops over Catoctin greenstone into a plunge pool where brave swimmers cool off on hot August days. The loop connects to the Dark Hollow Falls Trail briefly before returning via the upper Rose River, offering optional side trips to the famous Dark Hollow Falls just minutes away. Brook trout are visible in the clear, cold water of both streams, and great blue herons stalk the shallower pools. Spring wildflower diversity on this loop rivals any trail in the park, with extensive colonies of Virginia bluebells along the stream banks in April. The combination of accessible length, reliable water features, swimming opportunities, and proximity to other park highlights makes the Rose River Loop one of the most complete short hikes available in Shenandoah, appealing equally to casual walkers and dedicated naturalists.
