Fairy Falls and Grand Prismatic Spring Overlook

Fairy Falls is one of the most rewarding and accessible hikes in Yellowstone National Park, combining a stunning waterfall with an iconic geyser basin overlook. The trail begins near the Midway Geyser Basin parking area and follows a flat, well-maintained path through lodgepole pine forest before arriving at Fairy Falls, the tallest freestanding waterfall in the park at an impressive 197 feet.

The cascade plunges over a basalt cliff into a wide pool below, creating a serene and photogenic setting that feels far removed from the crowded boardwalks of Midway Geyser Basin. A short but steep spur trail branches off before the waterfall and climbs to the Grand Prismatic Spring overlook, where hikers are rewarded with a bird-eye view of the park most famous thermal feature. The rainbow-hued hot spring stretches nearly 370 feet in diameter, and the elevated vantage point reveals the full spectrum of colors invisible from the ground-level boardwalk. This overlook is one of the most photographed spots in all of Yellowstone. The trail is suitable for most fitness levels and makes an excellent family outing. Wildlife including bison, sandhill cranes, and various waterfowl can often be spotted along the way.
