Lone Star Geyser Trail

The Lone Star Geyser Trail offers a peaceful and accessible backcountry experience that leads to one of Yellowstone most beloved thermal features. Beginning near Kepler Cascades south of Old Faithful, the trail follows the Firehole River upstream through a tranquil forest setting, far from the bustle of the main geyser basins. The route is mostly flat and follows a paved service road before transitioning to a dirt path.

Lone Star Geyser is the second largest geyser in Yellowstone, featuring a striking 12-foot sinter cone built up over thousands of eruptions. Unlike the crowds at Old Faithful, Lone Star sees far fewer visitors, creating an intimate and almost meditative experience. The geyser erupts on a remarkably predictable schedule of approximately every three hours, sending a column of water and steam up to 45 feet into the air for about 30 minutes. A trail log near the geyser records recent eruption times, helping hikers time their arrival for a show. The surrounding meadows attract elk, bison, and a variety of bird species. The Firehole River alongside the trail is a classic fly-fishing destination. This trail is one of the finest examples of Yellowstone quieter, more contemplative side, rewarding those willing to walk a short distance beyond the most popular attractions.
