Clouds Rest is the largest exposed granite surface in Yosemite National Park and one of the most spectacular summit destinations in the entire Sierra Nevada. At 9,926 feet, this massive granite ridge soars above Tenaya Canyon and offers views of Half Dome, Yosemite Valley, Tenaya Lake, and the vast High Sierra backcountry that are simply unmatched in scope and grandeur.

The trail departs from Tenaya Lake on Tioga Road and climbs steadily through subalpine forest and across open granite slabs before reaching the long, exposed ridge of Clouds Rest itself. The final approach along the narrow ridgeline requires a head for heights, as the granite drops away steeply on both sides, but the path is well-traveled and manageable for confident hikers. The summit panorama encompasses more of Yosemite than any other accessible viewpoint, with Half Dome appearing at nearly eye level just over a mile to the southwest, allowing photographers to capture its iconic profile without the crowds of the valley floor. The sweeping view north and east into the High Sierra backcountry reveals a seemingly endless expanse of granite peaks, domes, and valleys. A wilderness permit is required for overnight trips and recommended for day hikers visiting between late May and November when the quota system is in effect. The trail involves significant exposure and should be avoided during afternoon thunderstorms, which develop frequently in summer.
