The North Dome Trail offers one of the most unique and jaw-dropping perspectives in all of Yosemite National Park, delivering hikers to a granite summit at 7,542 feet that sits at eye level with Half Dome across the valley. This vantage point, combined with a visit to Indian Rock arch along the way, makes the North Dome hike one of the finest in the High Sierra.

The trail begins at the Porcupine Creek Trailhead on Tioga Road and traverses open granite slabs and mixed conifer forest along the rim of Yosemite Valley. A worthwhile detour to Indian Rock, Yosemite only natural arch, adds both scenery and geological interest to the journey. As the trail nears North Dome, the terrain opens onto broad granite slabs that require careful route-finding but reward hikers with expanding panoramas. The summit view is extraordinary: Half Dome rises directly across Tenaya Canyon, revealing the full curving profile of its sheer north face in a way that no other vantage point in the park can match. Clouds Rest and the Cathedral Range stretch to the northeast, while Yosemite Valley unspools far below to the west. Royal Arches sweeps dramatically below North Dome itself. A wilderness permit is required for overnight camping in this zone. The trail is far less crowded than valley hikes and offers a genuine sense of High Sierra solitude combined with some of the most dramatic views in California.
