Bar Harbor Shore Path

The Bar Harbor Shore Path is a flat, accessible walk along the rocky shoreline of Frenchman Bay directly from downtown Bar Harbor. The path begins at the Village Green and follows the water's edge for nearly a mile one-way, offering unobstructed views of the Porcupine Islands and the mountains of Acadia across the bay. The gravel surface is well-maintained and smooth enough for most visitors, including those with strollers or mobility limitations, making it one of the most accessible coastal walks on the Maine coast.

At low tide, the exposed rockweed-covered ledges teem with intertidal life — periwinkles, hermit crabs, sea urchins, and occasionally harbor seals hauled out on the outer rocks. Sunrise on this path is exceptional; the eastern exposure means the first light hits the water and the islands in brilliant orange and gold. The path passes several historic cottages and the Bluenose Inn perched on the hill above. Benches are spaced along the route for rest stops. The walk ends near the Bar Island causeway, where an optional low-tide crossing to Bar Island adds another 1.5 miles of exploration on a gravel bar that is only accessible for about two hours on either side of low tide.
