Tuafanua Trail

The Tuafanua Trail climbs steeply from the edge of Vatia village into the tropical rainforest canopy of Tutuila Island, reaching a high ridge with sweeping views of Vatia Bay and the scattered volcanic sea stacks of the north coast. The trail gains nearly 900 feet in two miles through some of the most biologically dense tropical forest in the American South Pacific, passing tree ferns, pandanus thickets, and the enormous banyan trees that anchor the middle-elevation canopy.

The ridge at the top commands an extraordinary view of the jagged coastline, the turquoise bay below Vatia village, and on clear days the outlines of neighboring islands on the horizon. Flying foxes — enormous fruit bats with wingspans exceeding three feet — are a regular sight in the canopy and are culturally significant to Samoan communities. The trail is steep and requires sure footing on root-crossed jungle paths that can become slippery after rain, which is frequent year-round. The local community in Vatia maintains the trail and visitors are encouraged to stop and introduce themselves. This is one of the less-visited trails in the park, offering a genuine wilderness experience on a remote Pacific island.
