Marufo Vega Trail

The Marufo Vega Trail is the most demanding and rewarding full-day loop in Big Bend's eastern sector, climbing from the Rio Grande floodplain over a rugged limestone ridge and descending through a canyon system back to the river with almost no shade along the route. The trail requires route-finding skill in sections where desert varnish and weathering have obscured cairns, and carries a genuine backcountry character rarely found on maintained national park trails. The first section follows the Rio Grande through the Boquillas Canyon area before climbing steeply to the mesa top.

From the high point at approximately 3,200 feet, the view encompasses both the Mexican and American sides of the Big Bend landscape — an immense, silent desert of limestone hills, dry arroyos, and the silver thread of the Rio Grande cutting through the deepest canyons. The descent through Ore Terminal Canyon involves boulder scrambling and narrows that require careful footwork. Water is not available on the trail; carry a minimum of four liters per person. Desert bighorn sheep inhabit the limestone ridges and are occasionally spotted on the rocky faces above the trail. Complete this trail only in cool months — the exposed limestone surface becomes dangerously hot by late morning from April through September.
