North Vista Trail to Exclamation Point

The North Vista Trail on the North Rim provides the best long-distance perspective of the Black Canyon's full depth and width, culminating at Exclamation Point — a narrow promontory jutting into the canyon where both walls are simultaneously visible and the sheer scale of the gorge becomes physically overwhelming. The trail traverses North Rim plateau through sage, pinyon, and juniper scrubland, with periodic canyon rim views on the approach before the dramatic final push to the point.

From Exclamation Point, the canyon walls drop 2,000 feet in near-vertical dark Precambrian rock, narrowing at the Painted Wall section — the largest cliff face in Colorado at 2,250 feet — to a width of only 1,100 feet at the rim. The Gunnison River is visible as a white ribbon at the base. Peregrine falcons, which nest on the canyon walls, are frequently sighted from this viewpoint stooping on prey over the void. The North Rim is accessed via a rough dirt road off Highway 92 that adds 30 minutes of driving from the South Rim; the result is far fewer visitors and a genuinely remote atmosphere. The road is typically closed November through April depending on snowfall.
