Desert Nature Walk

The Desert Nature Walk is a short paved loop near the visitor center that introduces visitors to the Chihuahuan Desert ecosystem above the famous caverns. Interpretive signs along the path identify the dominant plant species of this high-desert scrubland: lechuguilla agave — the indicator plant of the Chihuahuan Desert — along with sotol, prickly pear, yucca, and the spiny-stemmed ocotillo that blooms orange-red in spring. The walk provides context for the unusual geology and biology of Carlsbad Caverns before or after the underground experience.

The Guadalupe Mountains visible from the trail are one of the finest exposed ancient reef systems in the world — the caverns were dissolved from this Permian-age limestone reef by sulfuric acid rising from below, an unusual speleogenesis process that makes Carlsbad geologically distinct from most caves worldwide. In summer evenings, the walk offers a vantage point to observe the famous bat flight: over 400,000 Brazilian free-tailed bats emerge from the cave entrance at dusk in a spiraling column visible from this trail. The flight begins about 30 minutes before sunset and is one of the great wildlife spectacles in North America, drawing crowds to the natural amphitheater near the cave entrance.
