Ledges Trail

Ledges Trail explores the most dramatic geological feature in Cuyahoga Valley — a series of Sharon Conglomerate rock outcrops that form cliff faces, overhangs, and narrow slot passages along the edge of a wooded plateau. The Sharon Conglomerate, deposited as river sediment approximately 320 million years ago, has been eroded into a series of resistant ridges and outcrops that create a surprisingly dramatic landscape for the relatively low-relief Ohio terrain. The trail passes beneath overhangs where ice forms in winter long after surrounding terrain has thawed, and through tight rock passages that require turning sideways.

The forest surrounding the ledges is a mature mixed oak woodland with scattered hemlocks in the sheltered ravines below the cliff faces — one of the largest concentrations of native hemlock in the western Reserve of Ohio. Spring wildflowers are exceptional here: trillium, trout lily, Jack-in-the-pulpit, and wild ginger carpet the forest floor from late March through May. In late fall, the deciduous canopy strips away to reveal the full geometry of the sandstone ledges against bare trees. Ice climbers occasionally practice on the frozen seep faces in winter. The trail also connects to the Octagon Shelter area with its views across the Cuyahoga Valley and the active Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad visible below.
