Stanford Run to Beaver Marsh Loop

The Stanford Run to Beaver Marsh Loop combines one of the park's best stream corridors with Beaver Marsh — a remarkable ecological restoration story where beavers reclaimed a junkyard site in the 1980s and created a thriving wetland that is now one of the best wildlife viewing areas in northeast Ohio. The trail begins along Stanford Run, a clear tributary of the Cuyahoga River, and traverses through riparian forest of sycamore, black walnut, and cottonwood before reaching the marsh boardwalk.

Beaver Marsh sits in what was formerly a storage lot for junked cars that the NPS remediated after park establishment. Beavers moved in spontaneously and within a decade transformed the area into a productive wetland that now supports great blue heron rookeries, mink, river otters, muskrat, painted turtles, and an extraordinary variety of waterfowl. The boardwalk through the marsh provides excellent viewing of all these species, and great blue heron chicks are visible in the rookery nests from late spring through early summer. The marsh sits directly beneath the Towpath Trail, and the combination of the two trail systems in one loop creates one of the most diverse wildlife-watching walks in any national park in the eastern United States.
