Ozone Falls: A Stunning 110-Foot Plunge in Cumberland County
Ozone Falls State Natural Area, Cumberland County
About Ozone Falls
Ozone Falls delivers one of the best waterfall-to-effort ratios in Tennessee. The falls plunge 110 feet in a perfectly vertical freefall into a circular pool of sandstone, and the entire round trip is less than a mile. The circular rock amphitheater surrounding the plunge pool creates an almost perfect acoustic chamber — the roar is remarkable for a relatively slender fall.
Located in the Ozone Falls State Natural Area in Cumberland County, the falls sit at the head of a narrow gorge that drains into Flat Fork Creek. The surrounding forest is a mix of second-growth oak and pine with patches of old hemlock in the gorge. This is one of the easiest major waterfall hikes in Tennessee, suitable for most visitors.
Trail Highlights
- 110-foot freefall waterfall — exceptional height for a less-than-one-mile hike
- Circular sandstone amphitheater creates a natural acoustic wonder
- One of the best waterfall-to-effort ratios in Tennessee
- Perfect quick stop when driving between Crossville and Knoxville on I-40
- Gorge path leads to the base of the falls for a dramatic close-up view
Trail Description
From the parking pull-off on TN-299, follow the short trail through oak forest to the rim overlook above the falls. The view from the top is striking — you look straight down 110 feet to the pool below.
Continue on the gorge path that descends to the base of the falls via switchbacks. The circular pool and overhanging rock walls create an intimate, amphitheater-like setting. The mist from the falls keeps the base cool even in summer. Return the same way.
Tips & What to Bring
- The rim overlook is unprotected — use extreme caution near the edge
- The descent trail to the base is steep and can be slippery — take your time
- Parking is a roadside pull-off that fits only a few cars; arrive early on weekends
- This makes an excellent quick stop on the drive between Knoxville and Crossville
- Visit after rain for maximum flow and mist — the amphitheater effect is best at high water
