The trail follows Panther Creek through one of the most beautiful gorges in north Georgia, with towering rock walls, swimming holes, and multiple smaller cascades building anticipation for the main event.
The Panther Creek corridor is a showcase of north Georgia biodiversity — old hemlocks, sweeping rhododendron thickets, rare plants, and an abundance of wildlife. Trail Description
From the Panther Creek trailhead off US-441 near Tallulah Falls, follow the trail west along Panther Creek. The path stays close to the creek, crossing several times on footbridges. Multiple smaller cascades and swimming holes appear in the first 2 miles.
At 3.5 miles the gorge narrows and Panther Creek Falls comes into view — an impressive 80-foot plunge into a wide, clear pool. The pool is one of the finest natural swimming holes in Georgia. Return via the same trail, exploring the creek-level features more thoroughly on the way back.
Tips & What to Bring
- Budget a full day — 7 miles with 900 feet of gain is a serious commitment
- Bring 2-3 liters of water; the creek water should be filtered before drinking
- The creek crossings can be dangerous during high water — check conditions first
- Water shoes are helpful for the creek-level sections near the falls
- The pool is an exceptional swimming hole — bring a towel and take a dip
