About Proxy Falls

Proxy Falls offers two dramatically different waterfall experiences in a single short loop. Upper Proxy Falls is a soaring 226-foot plunge from a basalt cliff into an ancient lava flow. Lower Proxy Falls is a more intimate 100-foot curtain that fans across a mossy basalt ledge. The loop trail through the lava field that connects them is fascinating geological terrain — ancient volcanic rock colonized by old-growth forest.

Located on OR-242 (McKenzie Pass Highway) in the Willamette National Forest near the town of Sisters, Proxy Falls is one of Oregon's most accessible and rewarding waterfall hikes. The area opens after snow clears from McKenzie Pass — typically late June — and closes with the first significant snowfall, usually October or November.

Trail Highlights

  • Two completely different waterfalls: 226-foot plunge and 100-foot curtain
  • Short 1.8-mile loop through an ancient volcanic lava flow
  • Upper Proxy Falls disappears into the porous lava at the base — the creek vanishes
  • McKenzie Pass area offers extraordinary Cascade volcanic landscape
  • Best accessed June through October — the pass highway closes in winter

Trail Description

From the Proxy Falls trailhead on OR-242, follow the loop trail counterclockwise (to Upper Proxy first). The trail passes through old-growth forest growing on ancient lava rock, with remarkable root systems visible above the porous stone.

Upper Proxy Falls plunges 226 feet into the lava field below — and then disappears into the porous rock (the creek has no outlet because the lava absorbs it). Continue the loop to Lower Proxy Falls for the contrasting curtain experience. Return to the trailhead via the loop.

Tips & What to Bring

  • OR-242 (McKenzie Pass) is closed in winter — typically open late June through October
  • The lava flow terrain on the trail is uneven — wear sturdy shoes
  • The upper falls' disappearing act is genuinely fascinating — look for the creek at the base (it's not there)
  • Combine with a drive over McKenzie Pass and the Dee Wright Observatory for a full day
  • Sisters and McKenzie Bridge have good food and lodging options nearby
