Most of the Appalachian Trail passes through dense forest. You catch glimpses of views through the trees, but sustained open ridge walking is rare. The Roan Highlands section in Tennessee and North Carolina is the exception — and it's magnificent. For 13+ miles, the trail crosses a series of open grassy balds with unobstructed views in every direction. In June, the surrounding rhododendron blooms transform the landscape into something otherworldly.

The Route

The classic day hike or backpack starts at Carvers Gap (elevation 5,512 ft) on the Tennessee/North Carolina border and follows the AT northbound through the balds. Most day hikers do an out-and-back to Grassy Ridge Bald (6,189 ft) — about 10 miles round trip. The full traverse continues to the Overmountain Shelter, a converted barn at mile 13.2 from Carvers Gap that has become an AT icon.

Round Bald (6,114 ft) comes first — a 1.5-mile climb from the parking area with views opening up immediately. This is one of the most photographed spots on the entire AT. Jane Bald (5,807 ft) follows after a brief descent into Engine Gap. The trail then climbs to the crown of the section: Grassy Ridge Bald at 6,189 feet, the highest bald in the southern Appalachians and the recommended turnaround for day hikers.

Rhododendron Season

Plan your visit for mid-to-late June to catch the rhododendron bloom. The highlands host one of the largest natural rhododendron gardens in the world. Peak bloom varies by year but typically falls between June 15–25. The festival held each June in Bakersville, NC draws thousands of visitors — book lodging well in advance.

Tips

  • Weather changes fast on exposed ridge lines. Bring a rain layer and wind layer even in summer — temperatures can drop 20°F with a storm.
  • Start early to beat afternoon thunderstorms on the open balds.
  • No shade on the balds — sunscreen and a sun hat are essential.
  • Water sources are limited on the balds. Carry enough from the car; there are streams in the gaps.
  • Dogs are allowed on leash.

Backpacking Option

The Roan Highlands make an outstanding 2-night backpack. Camp at Roan High Knob Shelter (the highest shelter on the AT at 6,285 ft) and the Overmountain Shelter. Permits are not required — first come, first served at shelters.
