Salt Creek Falls: Oregon's Second-Tallest Waterfall
Willamette National Forest, Lane County
About Salt Creek Falls
Salt Creek Falls is Oregon's second-tallest waterfall at 286 feet, plunging over a basalt lip in the Willamette National Forest high in the Oregon Cascades near Oakridge. The falls are visible from the highway and accessible via a short paved path — making them one of the most dramatic waterfall-per-effort ratios in the Pacific Northwest.
The falls are at their most powerful from March through June when snowmelt from the Cascades feeds Salt Creek. The area at the viewpoint is heavily misted in peak season. Below the falls a longer trail descends into the canyon for a close-up view of the base — a rewarding extension that most casual visitors skip.
Trail Highlights
- 286-foot plunge — second-tallest waterfall in Oregon
- Visible from OR-58 and accessible via a short paved trail
- High Cascades elevation keeps temperatures cool even in summer
- Below-the-falls trail (1.5 miles additional) delivers a rare close-up of the base
- Near Diamond Creek Falls — combine both for a full Willamette NF waterfall day
Trail Description
From the Salt Creek Falls day-use area on OR-58, follow the short paved path to the main viewpoint above the falls. The 286-foot drop is immediately visible and the scale is impressive.
For the full experience, follow the below-the-falls trail (Too Much Bear Lake Trail) that descends steeply into the canyon and approaches the base. The scale of the falls from below is extraordinary. Return via the same steep trail.
