Sandstone Falls: The Widest Waterfall in West Virginia
New River Gorge National Park, Summers County
About Sandstone Falls
Sandstone Falls is unlike any other waterfall in West Virginia. Rather than a tall plunge, it is a massive, wide cascade — stretching nearly 1,500 feet across the New River — that drops 10 to 25 feet through a series of channels around rocky islands. Located within New River Gorge National Park near Hinton, it is the widest waterfall in the state and one of the most visually striking.
A boardwalk system allows visitors to walk out onto the islands mid-river for views in all directions — the mountains, the river above the falls, and the roaring chute below. Early morning light is spectacular here, and the falls are beautiful in all seasons. In summer the islands attract waders and swimmers.
Trail Highlights
- Stretches nearly 1,500 feet wide across the New River
- Boardwalk system leads onto islands mid-river for 360-degree views
- Located inside New River Gorge National Park
- Accessible year-round; spectacular in all seasons
- Popular swimming and wading destination in summer months
Trail Description
From the Sandstone Falls parking area, follow the gravel path to the boardwalk system. The trail extends out onto river islands, giving you water on both sides. The roar of the falls grows louder as you move further along the boardwalk.
Walk to the furthest island platform for the best downstream view of the main cascade. On calm days the reflections in the upper pool are mirror-perfect. Return via the same boardwalk — the flat terrain makes this an easy out-and-back for any skill level.
Tips & What to Bring
- The boardwalk closes during flood conditions — check the NPS website before visiting
- Morning light from the east illuminates the falls beautifully for photography
- Wading on the islands is popular in summer but use caution — current is strong
- Bring sunscreen — the open river environment offers little shade
- Combine with a drive through the New River Gorge Scenic Byway (WV-41)
