📈 Elevation Profile
Skinny Dip Falls gets its name from a long-standing local tradition that predates the National Forest Service's jurisdiction over the area. The name lives on because the falls themselves are irresistible: a smooth natural waterslide pouring into a cold, deep pool at nearly 5,000 feet elevation, surrounded by old-growth spruce and fir. On a hot summer day, the slide and plunge pool are as refreshing as anything the mountains offer.
Trail Overview
The trailhead is at the Looking Glass Rock Overlook near Parkway Milepost 417. A short, user-created trail leads from the pullout down through rhododendron and across Yellowstone Prong to the falls. The route is brief but involves stepping across rocks — wet in all conditions. The falls pool is reached in under 10 minutes from the car.
The Falls and Slide
Skinny Dip Falls consists of a natural rock slide — a smooth, angled granite ramp about 25 feet long — leading into a pool deep enough for a safe plunge. The slide is faster than it looks; sitting on the edge and taking the ride is a commitment. The pool is cold even in August, fed by high-elevation springs, and the surrounding boulders make natural sunbathing spots.
Tips for Your Visit
- River shoes: Wear water shoes or old sneakers — the approach rocks and slide are slippery
- Privacy: The falls are popular but the small size naturally limits crowds
- High water caution: The slide and pool are dangerous in high water — check creek levels after rain
- Leave No Trace: Pack out everything; the site gets heavy use
- Combine with: Graveyard Fields is 1.5 miles south on the Parkway for a longer day
