The Spine Trail at Alafia River State Park follows the ridgelines created by reclaimed phosphate mining operations above the Alafia River valley, providing a moderate mountain biking experience with rewarding views and interesting terrain. The trail name refers to the central ridge corridor that connects several loop options within the park trail network, making the Spine a frequently traversed connector route as well as a satisfying standalone ride.

Elevated sections along the ridgeline offer glimpses of the Alafia River corridor below and the reclaimed ponds and wetlands that have developed in former mining depressions. Ospreys and bald eagles hunt the open water visible from the trail. The terrain combines moderate climbs with flowing descents that are more accessible than the demanding Yellow Loop while still delivering the topographic variety that makes Alafia exceptional among Florida state parks. Longleaf pine restoration efforts are visible along portions of the route, part of an ongoing effort to establish native plant communities on the reclaimed land. The trail surface is generally packed and rideable year-round, though clay sections can become slick following heavy rainfall. Gopher tortoise burrows are common along the trail margins. The Spine Trail is an excellent entry point for riders new to Alafia before progressing to the more technical Yellow and Black Loop options.
