Len Foote Hike Inn Trail

The Len Foote Hike Inn Trail is the approach route to the Len Foote Hike Inn—Georgia's only backcountry eco-lodge, accessible exclusively on foot. The five-mile trail climbs 900 feet through the southern Blue Ridge foothills to the lodge perched at 2,600 feet elevation, traversing second-growth hardwood forest recovering from early 20th-century logging. The route follows a series of ridgelines and creek drainages, with the steepest sections assisted by well-maintained rock and timber staircases.

The forest changes character with elevation: tulip poplar and white oak dominate the lower slopes, transitioning to chestnut oak and Virginia pine on the drier ridges, with a dense understory of rosebay rhododendron in the moist hollows. Rhododendron blooms transform the trail into a floral tunnel in late May and June. The Hike Inn itself was built in 1998 using sustainable construction practices and operates entirely on solar power, serving as both a destination and a model of low-impact backcountry tourism. Overnight guests enjoy sunrise views across the Blue Ridge and access to interpretive programs about Southern Appalachian ecology. Day hikers may use the trail but must turn back before the lodge itself without a reservation.
