Anastasia Nature Trail

The Anastasia Nature Trail loops through the maritime hammock at the heart of Anastasia State Park, one of the finest examples of coastal hammock ecosystem on Florida's northeast coast. The hammock occupies the elevated interior of Anastasia Island—a barrier island composed of ancient coquina rock and aeolian sand—and is dominated by live oak, red bay, and American holly draped in Spanish moss and resurrection fern. The hammock canopy is dense enough to create a cathedral-like shade even at midday.

The trail passes through a dune transition zone where sea oats stabilize the fore-dune and back-dune communities of salt meadow cordgrass, sea lavender, and beach morning glory frame the hammock edge. Painted buntings—the most colorful songbird in North America—winter in the hammock thickets from October through April and are reliably observed near the dense yaupon holly and wax myrtle. Gopher tortoise burrows are common in the sandy transition zones. The boardwalk sections carry visitors over low areas where seasonal freshwater ponds form, attracting wading birds. The park's position on the Atlantic Flyway makes migration periods—April and October—spectacular for warbler diversity in the hammock.
