Beach Loop

Beach Loop at Andrew Molera State Park provides a gentle introduction to one of the most beautiful and least developed stretches of the Big Sur coastline, exploring the driftwood-strewn beach at the mouth of the Big Sur River where the river delta meets the open Pacific. The loop crosses the Big Sur River on a seasonal footbridge and follows the river corridor through coastal scrub to the broad sandy beach, which accumulates impressive collections of wave-polished driftwood logs that transform this stretch of shoreline into a constantly changing sculpture garden. The beach itself extends southward along the base of coastal bluffs, and the combination of river mouth, sandy beach, and rocky headlands creates a habitat mosaic that attracts diverse wildlife year-round. Brown pelicans, western gulls, and Brandt cormorants patrol the nearshore waters, while snowy plovers nest on the upper beach during spring. Sea otters are frequently visible just offshore, diving for invertebrates in the kelp beds that fringe the rocky headlands. The river mouth area is particularly productive for shorebird watching during spring and fall migration. At low tide, a broad wave-cut platform is exposed at the base of the southern headland, revealing tide pools that shelter ochre sea stars, mussels, and chitons. This easy loop serves as a perfect standalone excursion or a gentle warm-up before tackling the more demanding Bluffs Trail or Ridge Trail.
