Slot Canyon Interpretive Trail

The Slot Canyon Interpretive Trail in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California, offers an enchanting journey through a series of narrow, wind-carved slot canyons set in the colorful badlands terrain of the park's central region. This 1-mile loop is one of the most accessible slot canyon experiences in California, requiring no technical skills while still delivering the dramatic sensory experience of walking between towering canyon walls that converge to just a few feet apart.

The canyons were carved over thousands of years by the occasional but powerful flash floods that funnel through the badlands, wearing away the soft sedimentary rock into smooth, flowing forms. The walls display a palette of warm colors including ochre, red, and tan, with layers of different geological strata visible in cross-section. The narrow passages create a microclimate noticeably cooler and more shaded than the open desert, offering welcome relief on warm days.

Interpretive signs along the route explain the geological forces that shaped the canyons and the plant and animal adaptations that allow life to thrive in this seemingly harsh environment. The trail is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, with only 100 feet of elevation change on a well-defined path through sandy and rocky terrain. The $10 per vehicle park entry fee applies. Dogs are not permitted on this trail. Hikers should be aware that flash flooding is possible after rainfall and should avoid the slot canyon section during and after storms.
