Silver Palm Nature Trail

Silver Palm Nature Trail winds through one of the finest examples of tropical hardwood hammock in the Florida Keys, protecting a remarkable concentration of plants found nowhere else in the continental United States. The trail takes its name from the silver palm, a threatened native species whose silvery fronds shimmer in the sea breeze. The hammock also shelters buttonwood, Jamaica dogwood, poisonwood, and dozens of other tropical species that reach their northern range limits here in the Keys.

Interpretive signs identify key plant species throughout the loop, making it an excellent botanical education experience for visitors unfamiliar with South Florida tropical flora. The dense canopy creates a cool, shaded microclimate that shelters white-crowned pigeons, mangrove cuckoos, and other tropical bird species rarely found north of the Keys. Land crabs scuttle through the leaf litter, and tree snails cling to smooth-barked tree trunks in their characteristic spiral patterns. The trail connects to the broader beach area of the park, allowing visitors to combine the nature walk with time on the celebrated Sandspur Beach nearby.
