Barr Trail to Timberline

Barr Trail is one of Colorados most famous and demanding mountain trails, serving as the course for the legendary Pikes Peak Marathon and Ascent races held each August. The trail begins in Manitou Springs at roughly 6,300 feet and climbs relentlessly toward the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak, gaining more than 7,800 feet total from the trailhead to the top. This out-and-back version to timberline at approximately 11,500 feet provides a demanding 12-mile day hike suitable for experienced hikers acclimatized to altitude. The first miles wind through dense Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir forest before the trail traverses increasingly rocky switchbacks into spruce-fir woodland. Near timberline the landscape opens dramatically, revealing boulder fields and tundra typical of Colorado high country. Barr Camp, a historic wooden hut at 10,200 feet, provides water, snacks, and shelter roughly two-thirds of the way to the summit and marks a natural turnaround for those doing the day version. Named for Fred Barr who built the trail between 1914 and 1921, the route remains a pillar of Front Range hiking culture. Afternoon thunderstorms are extremely common; plan to turn around by noon regardless of progress.
