Rocky Canyon View

The Rocky Canyon View trail climbs the eastern approach to Beaverhead Rock through rocky canyon terrain that provides a different geological perspective on the limestone formation than the main overlook route. The canyon walls expose layered sedimentary rock sequences that record environmental changes spanning millions of years, from ancient marine environments to terrestrial deposition, all uplifted and sculpted by erosion into the dramatic canyon landform the trail traverses.

The route gains elevation steadily through mixed sagebrush and bunchgrass habitat interspersed with rocky outcroppings where prairie rattlesnakes occasionally bask in the afternoon sun, requiring watchful footing on warm days. Canyon wrens call from rock crevices with their cascading descending song, and white-throated swifts cut through the canyon airspace on scimitar wings. The trail reaches a viewpoint from which the historic expedition landmark character of the rock is clearly apparent, its distinctive profile matching the beaver-head shape that Sacajawea recognized and that appears in Lewis expedition journal drawings from August 1805. The broader view from this approach encompasses the Beaverhead River corridor, the agricultural valley bottom, and the distant Ruby and Tobacco Root mountain ranges that define the eastern horizon of this corner of Montana famous for its ranching heritage and world-class trout fishing rivers.
