Blue Heron Loop

Blue Heron Loop traverses the gorge rim and river bottom around the historic Blue Heron Mining Community, a remarkably preserved coal mining ghost town within Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The mining community operated from 1937 to 1962, and the National Park Service has preserved and interpreted the site with outdoor exhibits including recreated mining structures and recorded oral histories from former residents accessible through push-button speakers at each exhibit. The loop trail descends from the mining community through the sandstone gorge walls to reach the Big South Fork River at the bottom, following the river corridor before climbing back to the plateau level. The gorge bottom ecosystem contrasts sharply with the plateau forest above, supporting large sycamore, box elder, and silver maple trees in the floodplain alongside the river. The river section offers opportunities to observe great blue herons, belted kingfishers, and river otters that inhabit the waterway. The mining community is accessible by a separate scenic railway from Stearns, Kentucky, but hikers approaching on the trail experience the gradual descent and arrival that gives the isolated community its proper context. No entrance fee is charged. The Blue Heron area includes picnic facilities and restrooms.
