St. Johns River Walk traces the wild shoreline of one of only a handful of rivers in North America that flows northward, the legendary St. Johns River. The trail hugs the riverbank, threading through a mix of hydric hammock, buttonbush marsh, and open river flats that attract an extraordinary diversity of wading birds and waterfowl. Roseate spoonbills, with their shocking pink plumage, are a highlight that draws photographers from across the country.

Alligators are a common and expected presence along the shoreline, basking on mudflats and sliding quietly into the river as hikers approach. Great blue herons, tricolored herons, snowy egrets, and wood storks stalk the shallows with deliberate patience. During winter months, the river corridor fills with migratory waterfowl including ring-necked ducks and hooded mergansers. The trail surface remains flat and accessible throughout, following a natural path shaded by red maples and water oaks. The out-and-back format allows hikers to set their own pace and linger at productive wildlife viewing spots along the way.
