Pond Walk Trail

The Pond Walk Trail is Borderland State Park's most accessible and family-friendly route, threading past three distinct kettle ponds while passing through the park's designated rock climbing area—an unusual combination that makes for a particularly varied and interesting outing. The trail departs from the main parking area near the Ames Mansion and winds through glacially sculpted terrain where large quartzite and granite boulders punctuate the forest floor. Swamp Pond, Leach Pond, and Silk Mill Pond each offer distinct shoreline habitats ranging from cattail marsh to rocky wooded shores. The rock climbing area features a modest granite outcrop where local climbers practice top-rope and bouldering routes on well-featured stone, often visible from the trail below. The surrounding forest supports a productive understory of mountain laurel that explodes in white bloom in mid-June, carpeting the hillsides around the ponds. Spring brings wood frogs, peepers, and spotted salamanders to the trail-side vernal pools, creating a deafening chorus on warm April nights following rain. The trail surface is wide and generally firm, with minimal technical difficulty and only gentle elevation changes, making it suitable for children and hikers of all experience levels. The route passes near the park visitor center where natural history exhibits and trail maps are available throughout the operating season.
