Upper Leach Pond Trail

The Upper Leach Pond Trail loops around the northern end of Leach Pond, the larger of Borderland State Park's two main water bodies, passing one of the park's most architecturally distinctive features: a beautifully crafted historic stone arch dam that impounds the pond's outlet. The dam was constructed in the early 20th century as part of the Ames estate's landscape improvements and exemplifies the Arts and Crafts–influenced stonework found throughout Borderland's grounds. The trail follows the pond's rocky northern shoreline through a mixed forest of white oak, red maple, and white pine, with numerous granite outcrops providing elevated views across the open water. Largemouth bass and chain pickerel inhabit the pond, and the shoreline is dotted with fishing spots accessible from the trail. Common loons occasionally visit Leach Pond during spring and fall migration, and painted turtles bask on exposed rocks and logs along the quieter eastern shore. The loop returns through a mature white pine grove whose soft needle carpet muffles footsteps and creates an unusually quiet, contemplative atmosphere. The trail connects easily to the longer Moose Trail Loop and the pond's southern circuit for hikers wanting to extend their visit. Interpretive panels near the dam explain the estate's history and the Ames family's significant role in 19th-century American industry.
