Lakes Loop Trail

The Lakes Loop Trail at Bottomless Lakes State Park connects eight remarkable sinkholes filled with groundwater that display stunning shades of turquoise, green, and deep blue depending on depth and mineral content. New Mexico's first state park, established in 1933, preserves these unique geological features formed when underground gypsum and salt deposits dissolved, causing the surface to collapse and creating deep depressions that filled with groundwater. The trail links all eight lakes including Lea Lake, Cottonwood Lake, Mirror Lake, Figure Eight Lake, and Lazy Lagoon in a continuous route that reveals the fascinating variety of sizes, depths, and colors within the sinkhole complex. Each lake has its own distinct character, with the deepest reaching over ninety feet and displaying an intense turquoise color from the mineral-rich water. The surrounding red bluffs of the Pecos River valley provide a dramatic backdrop that contrasts beautifully with the brilliant water colors. Migrating waterfowl use the lakes as important stopover habitat, making fall and spring particularly rewarding for birdwatchers. Scuba diving is permitted in designated lakes for certified divers. The flat terrain and well-maintained path make this loop accessible to hikers of all abilities, including families with young children. The dramatic color contrast between the blue-green lake water, red bluff walls, and surrounding Chihuahuan Desert vegetation creates a visually striking landscape that makes Bottomless Lakes one of New Mexico's most photogenic destinations.
