Hidden Pond Trail

Hidden Pond Trail loops to a small, secluded freshwater pond tucked into the upland forest of Brandywine Creek State Park, providing a quiet destination removed from the more heavily trafficked creek-side trails. The pond was created by a small earthen dam on a tributary of Rocky Run and supports a remarkably diverse assemblage of wetland wildlife given its modest size. Wood duck nest boxes installed by park staff and volunteers line the pond margin, and the colorful males are visible on the water through the breeding season from March through August. Painted turtles bask on logs at the pond's edge in warm months, stacking three or four deep on favored sites. Great blue herons fish the shallows at dawn and dusk, and green herons are regular summer visitors. In spring the pond margins resound with the calls of wood frogs, spring peepers, and American toads, followed later in the season by the banjo-twang of green frogs. Dragonfly diversity at the pond is exceptional in summer, with 15 or more species documented including eastern pondhawks, twelve-spotted skimmers, and slaty skimmers. The surrounding upland forest is mature second-growth oak and hickory with a diverse understory including spicebush, which supports the spicebush swallowtail butterfly and its distinctive rolled-leaf caterpillar shelter. The trail is flat and well-maintained, suitable for young children and casual walkers seeking a peaceful natural area close to Wilmington.
