Rocky Run Trail – Brandywine Creek Sp
Rocky Run Trail follows the small tributary of the same name from its confluence with Brandywine Creek upstream through a wooded ravine before looping back through upland mixed hardwood forest, offering a varied and accessible outing through Brandywine Creek State Park's interior. Rocky Run itself is a clear, cool stream over a gravel and cobble bed, supporting a healthy macroinvertebrate community indicative of good water quality. Belted kingfishers nest in the steep eroded clay banks along the stream and are frequently observed rattling between perches or plunging headfirst into the water for small fish. Great blue herons stalk the shallows methodically, and the creek confluence with the Brandywine is a reliable location for observing these large waders year-round. The trail passes through a zone of older second-growth forest approaching the Brandywine Creek confluence where beech trees with their smooth gray bark and the characteristic carved initials of generations of visitors create an intimate forest atmosphere. Wood thrushes breed in the closed-canopy sections and their haunting, fluty songs fill the ravine on summer mornings and evenings. The loop climbs gently onto a rolling upland of oak and hickory before descending back to the creek corridor. Spring ephemerals including spring beauty, wild ginger, and bellwort bloom along the moist slopes above the stream in April.
