Hesitation Point Trail

Hesitation Point Trail climbs to the highest elevation in Brown County State Park, a modest but commanding summit that offers a sweeping panoramic view across the deeply folded hills and hollows of one of Indiana's most scenic landscapes. The name Hesitation Point reportedly derives from the moment of pause hikers and early horseback riders experienced upon cresting the ridge and encountering the sudden, dramatic drop into the valley below. The trail ascends steadily through a mixed hardwood forest of oak, hickory, and maple, passing through several distinct plant communities as the slope aspect and moisture conditions change. The drier south-facing slopes support chestnut oak and blueberry shrubs, while the moister north-facing hollows harbor spicebush, pawpaw, and sugar maple. The overlook at the summit provides the best long-range view in the park, extending across multiple ridges toward the valley of Salt Creek. In autumn, this viewpoint is among the finest fall color overlooks in the entire state. The out-and-back format means the elevation gain must be reversed on the return, adding to the moderate workout. The trail surface is generally good packed earth with some rocky sections near the summit. This is a popular destination for sunrise visits during peak fall color season.
