Observatory Trail

The Observatory Trail is a short paved and gravel path leading from the park campground to the Bruneau Dunes Observatory, one of the finest public stargazing facilities in the Pacific Northwest. The observatory sits in what is considered among the darkest sky corridors remaining in Idaho, far removed from the light pollution of any significant city. On clear nights the Milky Way arches overhead in breathtaking clarity.

The park hosts public telescope viewings on Friday and Saturday evenings throughout the warmer months, staffed by knowledgeable volunteers who guide visitors through identifying constellations, planets, and deep-sky objects. The facility features multiple telescopes including a large Meade reflecting telescope housed in a roll-off roof observatory building. Even without a scheduled program, the walk itself after sunset offers extraordinary naked-eye astronomy. The flat, short trail makes this accessible to visitors of all ages and mobility levels. Bringing a red-light flashlight is recommended, as white lights are discouraged to preserve night vision for all observers gathered at the site.
