Small Dune Loop

The Small Dune Loop circles the park second dune complex, a gentler and more approachable counterpart to the towering main dune. This well-marked loop passes alongside a quiet desert lake that sits at the base of the smaller dunes, creating a striking juxtaposition of sand and water that defines Bruneau Dunes and sets it apart from any other state park in Idaho.

The trail meanders through sagebrush and native grasses before curving around the lakeshore where great blue herons often stand motionless at the water edge. Migratory waterfowl stop here during spring and fall, and anglers frequently try their luck for largemouth bass and bluegill from the bank. Interpretive signs along the route explain the geology of aeolian dune formation, describing how prevailing winds from opposite directions prevented the dunes from migrating and instead stacked them into their remarkable height.
